Transfer Gossip: Bolton Wanderers could sign former player ahead of Baptista - Lion of Vienna Suite

Reports from The Bolton News this morning stated that Bolton Wanderers could sign former player and Republic of Ireland international Joey O’Brien ahead of former Arsenal, Real Madrid and Brazilian international, Julio Baptista.

O’Brien, who has been without a club since leaving West Ham United at the end of the 2015/2016 season, has been training with Wanderers for the past few weeks, impressing manager Phil Parkinson as he aims for a return to full fitness.

Joey O’Brien, now 31, started his career with Bolton Wanderers in 2002 as you well know. He made his Wanderers debut two years later, coming on as a late substitute in Bolton’s 2-0 win against Yeovil Town in The Carling Cup.

A loan spell with Sheffield Wednesday followed, before O’Brien went on to play 70 times in seven injury heavy years, including eleven appearances in the UEFA Cup.

O’Brien moved on a free transfer to reunite with Big Sam at West Ham in 2011, and in five years at Upton Park, he scored three goals in 105 games.

Joey O’Brien’s last professional appearance came against Liverpool back in February 2016.

Of course, any move for Baptista or O’Brien is dependent on the EFL allowing Wanderers extra numbers in the squad. Or the embargo getting lifted completely.

Would you be happy with the return of Joey O’Brien? Let us know in the comments box below.
