One of Tennessee's top in-state targets confirmed Tuesday that he's still almost a month away from announcing his college decision.
Four-star Class of 2020 defensive end Tyler Baron of Knoxville (Tenn.) Catholic High School posted Tuesday afternoon on his Twitter account that he will be making his choice known on Dec. 18, the first day of the early signing period.
"I will be announcing my commitment on National Signing Day December 18th," he tweeted.
The 6-foot-4, 252-pound Baron didn't name a list of finalists in revealing his formal plans for making his decision. But he told GoVols247 last month that he had his sights set on three schools: Tennessee, Ohio State and Kentucky.
He has been on official visits to Kentucky, Ohio State and Oklahoma, and nearby Tennessee has been widely viewed as one of the favorites to land him throughout his recruitment. His father, Patrick Abernathy, works in player development on second-year Vols coach Jeremy Pruitt's staff.
The 247Sports Crystal Ball points to Tennessee as the favorite to land Baron, with the Vols getting 71 percent of the current predictions and the other 29 percent set to "undecided."
Baron is ranked the No. 108 overall prospect and No. 4 strongside defensive end in the 2020 class and the No. 4 senior from the state of Tennessee, according to the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.
Former Tennessee coach Butch Jones' staff gave Baron his first scholarship offer in November 2016, and he now has received scholarship offers from almost 40 schools.
Baron has visited the Vols dozens of times throughout his recruitment, and he has been to Tennessee's campus even more frequently since he transferred from Ensworth School in Nashville, Tenn., to nearby Knoxville Catholic in January.
He's a teammate of four-star Vols offensive line commitment Cooper Mays. Baron also is a friend and former teammate of four-star Tennessee defensive back commitment Keshawn Lawrence.
Baron most recently went on an unofficial visit to Kentucky on Nov. 9 to attend the Wildcats' 17-13 loss to the Vols. The day after the visit, he made a post on his Twitter account that suggested he might have his college choice in mind.
"I think I’ve made my decision," he tweeted at the time.
He also has been to multiple games at Tennessee this season, most recently returning there Oct. 26 for the Vols' win over South Carolina. He told GoVols247 last month after attending Tennessee's win Oct. 12 against Mississippi State that he was encouraged by the progress the Vols had shown, including their "great" defensive performance against the Bulldogs.
“It was definitely a lot of positive things to take away from that,” Baron told GoVols247 at the time.
Baron said in September that he expected to announce a decision “by November,” but he hasn't rushed his choice to this point. He's now planning to take his recruitment all the way to the finish line.
