Arizona State football looking to add players with early signing date arriving - AZCentral

The Arizona State Sun Devils finished off Arizona to retain the Territorial Cup on Nov 30. The next day many of Herm Edwards' assistants were hitting the recruiting trail looking for the final pieces to add to their 2020 class. They will find out if that paid off on Wednesday when most put their names to official letters of intent.

The first Wednesday in February had always been the celebrated day for high school athletes but that changed in 2017 when football added an early signing date in December. That has increasingly become the more important date with coaches wanting the commitment finalized earlier.

Schools are allowed to sign a maximum of 25 athletes per class (between the December signing and more traditional February date) , although few actually sign that many.

Last season ASU signed 17 athletes in December with the allotment featuring the three heralded quarterbacks with one of those, Jayden Daniels, eventually winning the starting job.

That number is about what ASU should land again.  The Sun Devils currently have 14 verbal pledges, four of whom have four-star rankings according to 247 Sports. The group includes outside linebacker Jordan Banks (Harbor City Narbonne, Calif.), running back DeaMonte Trayanum (Archbishop Hoban, Akron, Ohio), wide receiver Chad Johnson (Los Angeles Cathedral) and defensive lineman Omarr Norman-Lott (Sacramento Grant Union).

Eight of ASU's commits are on the defensive side of the ball - three linebackers, three defensive backs and two linemen.

Among those expected to sign with ASU are two locals - inside linebacker Will Shaffer out of Saguaro and offensive tackle Ben Bray out of Mesa Red Mountain.

The Sun Devils are in the hunt for a handful of others, although some are waiting to make their commitments public until the respective All-American games in which they are playing in January. Among those players are four-star wide receiver Elijhah Badger and four-star running back Daniyel Ngata, both out of Folsom High School in Northern California.

Lead expert for 247Sports  Brandon Huffman has Badger projected at 82 percent for ASU. The picture is more uncertain for Ngata, once heavily leaning ASU but now with a 56 percent undecided, a 22 percent leaning ASU with 11 percent chance of either Texas A&M or Oklahoma State landing him.

One player expected to make his announcement on Wednesday is wide receiver Johnny Wilson out of Calabasas High School in Southern California. The 6-foot-6, 224-pounder committed to Oregon in July but is expected to flip to Arizona State. He is ranked 11th in California and 89th nationally by 247Sports and Rivals.

Wilson, who has 38 offers, has ties to Prentice Gill, once an offensive analyst at Oregon but recently named to a coaching position at ASU.

Edwards has also made it no secret he is one hunt for experience offensive linemen and plans to address that need through the transfer portal because the Sun Devils are in need of reinforcements who can play right away. So ASU needs to keep a few scholarships in hand.

They are also likely to hold out for another quarterback with the recent decision of Joey Yellen to transfer. ASU did have an quarterback commit in Blake Shapen out of Evangel Christian in Louisiana who was going to play football and baseball at ASU but he decommitted

ASU has planned a 2 p.m. press conference for Edwards and his staff to discuss the signing class. They will only be able to talk about those who have signed, not those who could potentially do so.
